Experience the Power of Swiss Pine

We have been "hooked" on Swiss Pine since the first time we saw, smelled and touched it. It is a special type of wood with great characteristics. Alpinepillows are designed to bring those amazing benefits to you in form of a tiny, yet very powerful pillow. Why a pillow, you ask? Because a pillow is about as close to our bodies as anything else. And since Swiss Pine has been linked (see more in our science section) to human health and sleep benefits, a pillow made all the sense in the world.

What is Swiss Pine and where does it grow?

Swiss pine typically grows at high altitudes, usually between 1,200 and 2,300 meters (3,900 to 7,500 feet) above sea level. It's well-adapted to harsh mountain conditions, including cold temperatures, high winds, and heavy snowfall.

The alps in Europe is the main natural habitat of Swiss pine. It's found across:

  • Switzerland

  • Austria

  • Italy (especially in the South Tyrol region)

  • France (in the eastern part of the country)

  • Germany (in small areas of the Bavarian Alps)

The tree prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils and requires full sun exposure. It's worth noting that while Swiss pine is not considered endangered, its natural habitat is limited, and some local populations may be under pressure due to climate change, logging, or changes in land use. Conservation efforts are ongoing in several Alpine regions to protect and maintain healthy Swiss pine forests.

Where we source our Swiss Pine

We work with small saw mills and land owners in the Austrian Alps to collect small batches of Swiss Pine wood to use as the key component of our Alpinepillows. The people working to harvest and process the wood are often doing so in 3rd, 4th or even fifth generation. This is truly remarkable as each piece of raw wood that turns into small flakes for our pillows carries a lot of this history.
